Dear Christmas Shopper,

You will probably know the basics of how to have an ethical Christmas shopping basket. But don't forget to check your copy of The Good shopping Guide so you can seek out those companies that are really ethical from top to tail. Be especially careful to weed out all those 'ethical wash' brands that are often from companies which simply do not have a good ethical record across the board - don't be fooled by big advertIsing campaigns, ethical packaging claims and PR.

A brand is only a truly ethical choice if its parent company takes a genuinely holistic approach to all the main ethical criteria - animal welfare, human rights and the environment. And the really ethical companies also seek out independent certification or ethical accreditation.

Annual Edition 6 of The Good Shopping Guide has hit the bookshops in time for Christmas - giving you the very latest 'full screening' research on which companies are truly ethical and which are not.

SOME BRANDS TO AVOID FOR AN ETHICAL CHRISTMAS ARE: Exxon Mobil 5; Procter and Gamble 33; Tesco 38; Walmart 42; Roche Holdings 29; Glaxo Smithkline 21; Coca Cola 28; Mitsubushi Corporation 24; Altria Group 20; HSBC 12; Barclays 18 (Ethical Company Index scores listed in brackets)
